Self-Care Habits to Start Off The School Year

In the blink of an eye, we've already reached the end of our summer and school is now back in swing! I'm sure many of you (like me) are dreading the amount of late nights and homework you'll be facing once the school year begins. While the tests and homework are unavoidable, today I'll be presenting to you some important self care habits that can help you power through the school year with a strengthened physical and mental state!

Chances are, you've heard of these habits before, likely more than once. But it's also equally likely that despite hearing about these habits, you consciously choose to ignore them or put them off for more pressing tasks.

However, this school year, I'm advising you to put these habits into action and see for yourself the amazing impact they can have on your wellbeing!

Let's get started!

Our first habit is sleeping early.

Sleeping early helps people get longer and better quality sleep. Besides giving you more energy, more sleep means a better mood, improved concentration, and a lower chance of chronic diseases.

More sleep also gives your body a chance to increase blood flow and collagen which repairs environmental and UV damage, as well as repair cells and restore energy. The brain also stores new information and gets rid of toxic waste during sleep.

This is why teachers always tell students to get a good night's sleep before exam season!

If those reasons weren't convincing enough, try this TED-Ed video:

Our second habit is journaling.

During a typical school day, students face a myriad of trials, from taking tests to stressing out about that giant homework assignment your chemistry teacher just gave you (speaking from personal experience).

Often, we don't give ourselves the time to wind down and let out our pent-up anxiety and stress, which can quickly lead to burn-out and frustration.

By letting out our thoughts through journaling, we can effectively release these negative emotions and reflect on our day, which will keep us going in the long run throughout the school year.

Our last habit for today is keeping a planner.

This habit absolutely saved me in my first year of high school. Not only did it keep me from forgetting about upcoming tests and deadlines, it also reduced my stress about managing my time. By mapping out what tasks would take up my day, I was able to focus on each individual task without worrying about what would come next.

Monthly planning sheets are also incredibly useful for keeping track of important dates that seem far in the future.

My current pocket sized mini planner that I LOVE:

And that's it for this post!

Good luck with the school year and remember to implement the habits I mentioned!
