Traveling has always been an incredible highlight of my childhood, and I’m very, very fortunate to have been able to experience and travel to so many diverse locations. Among one of my favorite places I’ve visited was Bio Bay, located in Laguna Grande, Puerto Rico.

Bio Bay was absolutely magical. We arrived here on a moonless night, and the stars were shining brightly, unlike the heavily fogged sky of the cities I’m used to seeing. We rowed quietly in our own rafts through the river, spotting the occasional iguana nestled in the leafy trees.

As we splashed and paddled in the water, we could see the water light up into billions of glowing, neon blue and green stars. These elusive organisms are called dinoflagellates, which generate a “glow-in-the-dark” effect, or in other words, bioluminescence, hence the name Bio Bay.

The sheer wonder and awe these illuminated lights brought me not only inspired me to write a poem about it, but I’m considering making a painting about Bio Bay as well. In the dark, seeing the stars glitter above and beneath me was an out of this world experience, further cementing traveling to Bio Bay as a beautiful memory of mine.
